Community Spotlight: Olivia Coleman
For this month’s community spotlight, we couldn’t help but focus on one of our favorite new employees, Olivia Coleman. You’ll find her serving up delicious treats at the MillBridge Café. In addition to working behind the counter, you may be surprised to hear what keeps her active during the school year and where else you can catch her later this summer!
Tell us a bit about yourself, Olivia.
I grew up in Marshville, N.C., but when I left for college at East Carolina University (ECU), my family moved to Monroe. I am very close with my family — my mom, dad and two younger brothers — and love being home with them for the summer.
In August, I will begin my junior year at ECU as part of their nursing program. I am also a member of the ECU Dance Team, which performs at all home football and basketball games, as well as many special appearances throughout the year. Additionally, we compete at National Dance Alliance Nationals in Daytona Beach every April. It is a big commitment of time, but worth the experience.
Since I was very young, I’ve been singing solos in church and at our town festivals. As I got older I joined the worship band at my high school and sang during the services. When I was 14, I became interested in the guitar, and through watching YouTube videos, I taught myself how to play. I’ve been playing ever since and still haven’t taken a single lesson.
What is your favorite part of working at MillBridge?
I began working at MillBridge back in May. I wanted to work here because it seemed like a great summer job and other than working at ECU’s tutoring center, this is the only “real job” I’ve had so far.
I enjoy meeting new people every day and getting to know and serve the residents and their sweet children. I also really enjoy working the events! I had so much fun at the luau event at the beginning of June.
What do you like most about the MillBridge community?
I love the unity of the MillBridge community. The residents truly enjoy coming together and spending time together. You can see that everyone really does want the best for the community.
You are quite the artist. What kind of music do you like to perform?
My favorite type of music is country. Most of what I sing is female country. Artists I look up to are Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini and Danielle Bradbery. I like to sing their music because I can relate to what they are singing about and it is music that reminds me of home when I am away at school.
What gig are you most proud of?
There are two gigs that I am most proud of. The first one is getting to sing at my high school graduation. I sang, “Don’t Forget to Remember Me” by Carrie Underwood and I had to fight back tears as I sang to my family and fellow classmates. Another gig I am very proud of is getting to sing the National Anthem at an ECU Basketball game. I have had this opportunity several times and I am grateful for it every time. The National Anthem is my favorite song to sing!
Where can MillBridge residents see you perform in July?
I’ll be playing at the pool on Friday, July 20th at 4 p.m.!
