Community Spotlight: Q&A with MillBridge’s Vic Montalvo
Millbridge resident, Vic Montalvo, and his family moved from New York in 2013 in search of a quieter life; however, after getting to know him a little better, we see that Vic hasn’t slowed down one bit! As a police officer, a dad, a coffee addict (for good reason), a softball player and a steward for children, Vic has found a plethora of ways to care for his neighbors and those in the surrounding Waxhaw community. Get to know Vic and family a little better, but don’t get too close unless you are ready to share his vibrant passion for educating children and serving the less fortunate out in our community.
Q: Tell us a little more about yourselves. Where are you from? What brought you to MillBridge?
A: My family and I moved from Long Island, NY in 2013. I was retiring from over 20 years in the NYPD and wanted a slower pace of life and a more affordable lifestyle than what we were used to. We chose Millbridge for the amazing school district. We also really liked our builder and all the amenities Millbridge offered.
Q: What do you do for a living?
A: I am a police officer for the Town of Waxhaw and my wife, Yselic, is a 4th grade school teacher at Rocky River Elementary. I am currently in charge of the Community Police Division in our Department and absolutely love what I do. I am involved in almost everything town related.
Q: Tell us more! It sounds like you’re involved a lot with different community programs?
A: I am a glutton for punishment and rarely say no. I am involved with the D.A.R.E. program and this is my 5th year teaching for the program at both Kensington and Waxhaw Elementary Schools as well as partnering up with the Waxhaw Athletic Association to sponsor underprivileged children in the Waxhaw area. I also organize a Back 2 School Bash in association with various community leaders each year which provides kids in need with school supplies, back packs, new sneakers, food and fun activities.
Q: How can MillBridge neighbors help with programs like D.A.R.E.?
A: There are so many ways to get involved. Most of the people that have helped with the program have had a child go through D.A.R.E. and want to continue to help other kids. Some of the ways to help would be volunteering with the graduation ceremonies and celebration days we have for the 5th grade graduates as well as donating to help with the purchase of supplies. We have many companies involved that match donations and contribute every year which really makes the program that much more special and effective for the kids.
Q: Why did you select MillBridge?
A: We loved the amenities, the pool and the people we met along the way. We loved that the school and fields were connected to the neighborhood. We rented in Millbridge for a year before we moved in to our home and we haven’t regretted one second. I speak at many of the various HOA meetings and deal with every neighborhood in Waxhaw and can absolutely state that Millbridge goes far above and beyond when it comes to events and activities. No other neighborhood comes close.
Q: Who is your builder and what do you like most about the house?
A: Our builder was Essex and we have not had any issues. We love the all brick design as well as the floor plan it offered. Our build took a little longer than some of the others but it was worth it because I rarely hear any complaints from the Essex home owners.
Q: Have you taken advantage of the community’s amenities and lifestyle activities?
A: Yes. We walk, run or bike the trails daily. My wife and daughter absolutely love the Yoga and Zumba classes offered. As for me, I love the coffee bar. I truly cannot function after 2 p.m. until I rejuvenate with my iced coffee made just the right way. If you are ever looking for me, that’s where you can usually run into me in the afternoons.
Q: Tell us more about your kids!
A: I have two wonderful kids who attend the middle school here as well as a 23-year-old still living in New York. My younger son and daughter are both straight A students and participate in track and cross country. They love the friends they have made here and do not miss New York one bit.
Q: What is one thing most people don’t know about you? Or a fun/interesting fact/skill or talent?
A: I am a pretty open book. I love sports and I love playing in the Adult Men’s Softball league here in Waxhaw. Lots of great guys and a lot more laughs than you would think. It truly is the highlight of my Sunday.
Q: Anything else you’d like to say to your neighbors?
A: Yes… I would really like to say, “THANK YOU.” Whenever my wife or I have a family in need of clothing, food or donations I am never let down. I can’t tell them how much their support is appreciated by the families we work with. It really is a beautiful community filled with so many great and unique personalities. I wouldn’t choose anywhere else to live… And no, I am not getting paid by Millbridge for this J!
